Icon of style in its best form
New Mercedes-Benz G-Class
The new Mercedes-Benz G-Class appears in one of the strongest forms of its long history. On rough terrain and on pavement, in the city and far beyond civilization, this SUV impresses with the depth of its capability, modern assistance systems, extraordinary off-road performance, and a high level of safety. A new suspension, DYNAMIC SELECT drive modes, a dedicated G-Mode, and three 100-percent differential locks improve both comfort and manoeuvrability — on almost any surface.
The new G-Class raises the bar in every key area: on-road dynamics, off-road ability, comfort, technology, and telematics. “Our long-serving model series is now ideally prepared to continue its success story. In short, the new G-Class is still a G-Class — only better,” emphasized Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.
Developing the new G-Class was an unusually demanding task for the engineering team. Technically improving a design icon such as the G-Class meant accepting both a challenge and a rare opportunity. “Every part and every screw was put to the test,” explained Dr. Gunnar Güthenke, who was responsible for the SUV product group at Mercedes-Benz. According to him, particular attention was paid to increasing body rigidity and to the connections between the suspension, drivetrain, and ladder-type frame.
The equipment of the new G-Class includes numerous modern features: LED headlamps, advanced driver assistance systems, a refined interior with leather seats, and a completely new suspension. For especially demanding customers, expanded options such as Exclusive Interior Plus with leather-trimmed doors bring even more individuality and premium character to the cabin.
The G-Class, interpreted for the modern era
The G-Class, Mercedes-Benz’s flagship off-road vehicle, has long been considered a true design icon. Since 1979, its exterior has changed remarkably little, and that is part of its magic. The elements that made the G-Class instantly recognizable were never random decorative details: they served specific functions while also shaping the vehicle’s character. In the new generation, all the key signatures remain: the distinctive door handle and characteristic closing sound, robust protective side mouldings, the exposed spare wheel on the rear door, and the prominent turn indicators on the front wings. Together with the angular silhouette, these elements create a look that cannot be mistaken for any other SUV.
The updated design of the G-Class follows the Mercedes-Benz philosophy of Sensual Purity while remaining faithful to the model’s original character. The exterior door hinges and surface-mounted bonnet are also carried over into the new generation. This off-road icon, technically refined over decades while remaining almost unchanged in appearance, now steps into a new era — both in engineering and in design. The new G-Class is 53 millimetres longer and 121 millimetres wider, giving it an even more commanding presence on the road and off it.
More than ever before, the new G-Class looks as though it has been carved from a single block of metal. The surfaces are sharper and more taut, while the quality of the exterior panels has been elevated to a new level. Narrower, more precise gaps and more harmonious transitions between body elements create a greater sense of solidity. The wheel arches and bumpers now appear less like add-on components and more like natural parts of one unified body volume.
Interior: a genuine style icon
If the exterior of this classic benchmark off-roader has been updated carefully and respectfully, the interior has been transformed far more dramatically. The new cabin is modern, technological, and considerably more luxurious, yet it does not abandon the model’s heritage. On the contrary, many exterior design elements are reinterpreted inside. The G-Class has always known how to bring together two opposites: the character of a genuine off-road vehicle and the atmosphere of a high-end luxury car. In the new generation, that balance is even more convincing. Only high-quality materials are used, immediately recognizable both visually and to the touch, and every detail is finished with the kind of care associated with craftsmanship.
Once inside the G-Class, it is easy to notice the dialogue with its exterior design. The round headlights are echoed in the shape of the side air vents. The form of the turn indicators is reflected in the loudspeakers. The signature grab handle in front of the passenger and the chrome-highlighted switches for the three differential locks remain defining elements of the cabin. Both have been carefully refined while preserving their role as visual and functional symbols of the G-Class.
As standard, the instrument cluster features classic analogue round dials set into deep, tube-like housings — a solution that fans of traditional automotive style will appreciate. For those who prefer a more contemporary digital environment, a widescreen cockpit familiar from the newer E-Class and S-Class is available. Two 12.3-inch displays beneath a shared glass cover visually merge into a single Widescreen Cockpit: one directly in the driver’s field of vision, the other above the centre console. The driver can choose between three display styles — Classic, Sport, and Progressive — and configure the information shown according to personal preference.
Thanks to haptic feedback and additional acoustic confirmation through the speakers, the touchpad on the centre console allows the driver to operate functions without taking attention away from the road. Direct-access buttons for frequently used features are positioned in front of the controller, while the optional assistance systems control panel sits above the rotary light switch. The driving position remains unmistakably G-Class: close to the windshield, with excellent all-round visibility and a strong feeling of control over the vehicle.
