Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God
Sutton
The unprecedentedly large wave of emigration in the 90s and the spiritual revival in the homeland increased the need for people in the church. The northern part of the Greater Toronto is more and more populated by Orthodox Russian people, who here, in Berezki, find spiritual nourishment and such a nature similar to Russia. Half a century ago, our Church was founded - and to this day it is an affirmation of the Faith and a manifestation of a firm Russian character.
The miraculous Icon of the Mother of God belongs to the most ancient icons of the Theotokos and has a long past closely connected with the history of Russia. Like other ancient icons of the Mother of God - Tikhvin, Vladimir, Korsun and others - she was brought from Byzantium. The son of Prince Vsevolod, Vladimir Monomakh, transferred the Icon to Smolensk and put it in the cathedral church, which was founded in 1101. Since that time it has become known as Smolensk.
